Containers are referred to as closed containers used to transport products from one place to another in freight transportation. Containers used in logistics operations are mainly used in sea, road and rail transportation. Although it is generally preferred for sea transportation, it is useful for all transportation models.
International shipments are subject to certain conventions. Contract rules change according to the characteristics of the product to be transported. The signed contracts contain data about the parties to the contract and data about the cargo being transported. Since containers are arranged in sea traffic, they are generally evaluated in the Seaway Bill.
A bill of lading issued by the first carrier is called a mixed bill of lading. Since the person who loads the product is also the person who packs the product, if the carrier does not provide the necessary information about the product, it can save the product from possible damage or financial loss. Conversely, if the carrier has issued a bill of lading, the carrier is liable for all damages.
In container transportation, it should also be taken into account that the container dimensions and design are compatible with the goods being transported. Since Turkey is not a party to any international agreement, the shipments are made within the rules of “Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations”. It is the carrier’s responsibility to deliver the products undamaged.
Carrying Capacity of Containers
Containers should be made in accordance with international criteria. Logistics companies engaged in container transportation continue their logistics activities according to these standards. International standard containers are 20 and 40 containers. Sizes 20 and 40 are used to determine the capacity of the container. Known as standard shipping containers, 20′ and 40′ containers allow smooth loading and unloading of ships, trains and road vehicles.
If the freight alone can fill a 20 or 40 foot container, it falls into the FCL (Full Container Load) shipping service category. However, if the amount of goods transported is not enough to fill a container, the container must be shared with two or more recipients. This mode of transportation is called partial container transportation or LCL (Less than Container Load) transportation.
Advantages of Container Transportation
The main advantage of container shipping is that it offers the option of Full Container Load (FCL) or Partial Shipment (LCL). Thanks to this service, companies have the opportunity to participate in foreign trade even if they do not have a load to fill a container.
Container transportation, which offers a safe, robust, fast and economical transportation experience, has the ability to carry more than one load at the same time. Container transportation continues to be the focus of attention every day due to its unique features.
Container transportation also facilitates trade between countries by providing services compatible with road, sea and railway.
